Get to know some of the Valkyrie players

As frequent STOB readers already know, we are now the official beat writers for the LFL’s Minnesota Valkyrie. We had a chance to go to tryouts this past weekend. While there, a few of the ladies who have already made the team took a minute to speak with us. So here is your first chance to learn a bit more about who will be making up the Minnesota Valkyrie. Look for more “Get to know them” post through out the season.

Kendra Leigh Ruff

Position(s)?

Kendra is looking to play Safety for sure and possibly some backup QB.

Athletic Past?

Athletics have always been in Kendra’s life, she played ice hockey growing up and more recently has gotten into MMA. Opposing MMA fighters haven’t had much luck against Kendra as she is undefeated on the amateur MMA circuit.

What made Kendra want to play in the LFL?

Kendra loves physical sports and is looking forward to lighting people up.

Training done in preparation for the LFL?

Outside of the usual training for MMA, Kendra has been working on aerobic workouts, plyometrics and running. The plyometrics should help Kendra as it is training that will increase her explosiveness. Watch out opposing wide receivers, those footsteps you hear are Kendra.

Pregame routine or Superstitions?

To get ready for a big game Kendra likes to turn on the Ipod and dance.

NFL Player You Are Most Like?

Hines Ward, he is a bulldozer and likes to light people up with big blocks.

What can fans expect from you this year?

Blowing people up with big hits.

Whitney Meierotto

Position(s)?

Wide Receiver/Safety

Athletic Past?

Played volleyball collegiately at Concordia University in St. Paul, MN.

What made you want to play in the LFL?

Whitney had an athletic past, loved being on a team and this is a great opportunity to be on a team and be competitive now that she is out of college.

Training done in preparation for the LFL?

Whitney worked on plyometrics and aerobic training to get her prepared to tryout for the LFL.

Pregame routine or Superstitions?

In college Whitney would get a hard time from teammates for always having to have her hair in just he right way. She plans on continuing this as much as possible in the LFL even though long hair can be used by opponents to tackle a player.

NFL Player You Are Most Like?

Greg Jennings is who Whitney sees some of her own skills in. Growing up a Green Bay Packer fan Whitney calls Greg Jennings “her boy”, but never fear Minnesota fan’s she was in all purple for the tryout and will be ready to take down the Green Bay Chill on August 26th.

What can fans expect from you this year?

Hopefully touchdowns and interceptions!

Jana Skrtic

Position(s)?

Starting QB

Athletic Past?

Jana played volleyball, basketball and softball. In college Jana played volleyball at Florida State University.

What made Jana want to play in the LFL?

Her family was a football family, her older brother played football and so she has always loved the game. All she wanted was an opportunity to play, once she heard about the LFL, she knew it was for her.

Training done in preparation for the LFL?

Jana’s preparations included sprints and lots and lots of throwing the football. STOB saw her throwing the ball and trust us, she has a cannon.

Pregame routine or Superstitions?

No real routine or superstition but loves to listen to music to get her pumped up.

NFL Player You Are Most Like?

Jana compared herself to Michael Vick when she is running and Peyton Manning when she is throwing. Those are two big names to live up to, but again STOB will attest to Jana having a cannon of an arm.

What can fans expect from you this year?

“FIRE!” On top of that Jana also plans on pumping up the crowd and team come game day. She will also be a leader and is hoping for no interceptions.

There you have it. Those are the first of many "Get to know them" player interviews we will be doing. So, follow all year and keep your eye out for me. If you have any questions you would like us to ask the players, email us at sportstearsinourbeers@yahoo.com
