Ricky Rubio to sign with Timberwolves before 2011 NBA Draft?

Call it a hunch, call it an assumption, or call it a prediction but STOB thinks that the 20yr old, 6’4”, 180lbs pretty boy from El Masnou, Spain will finally sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The signing will be announced before the 2011 NBA Draft we predict. In the past week Timberwolves GM David Kahn and Asst. GM Tony Ronzone flew over to Spain to meet with Rubio and hope to come back with a contract signed. The Timberwolves selected Ricky Rubio with the 5th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Ricky Rubio was unable or unwilling to arrange a NBA buyout with his team, DKV Joventut and therefore elected to move to FC Barcelona so he could continue to mature physically and come to the NBA as a more finished product. Only 20-years-old, his rights are still held by the Minnesota Timberwolves, so it would come as no surprise that he is going to sign now. With Rubio signing before this draft, this might cause David Kahn to dislocate his shoulder from patting himself on the back. Put hey, maybe for once, he was right.

What do Timberwolves fans have to look forward to?

Well, we think this means you can say goodbye to dream’s of selecting Kyrie Irving with the first pick in this year’s draft. Kahn will not upset Rubio by bringing in a PG that could compete for the starting job with him. Rumors were that by drafting Flynn with the 6th pick in 2009 right after Rubio, the Timberwolves upset Rubio who had expected to be handed the starting spot as a rookie.

Questions still remain on Rubio-

Rubio hasn’t been lighting it up for FC Barcelona and NBA scouts now look at Rubio in a less positive light than they did in 2009. Rubio still is struggling shooting the ball and there are increasing concerns that he may not be a great PG in the NBA.

STOB’s Dream Trade Idea w/Rubio Signed:

If David Kahn is reading this, give the Indiana Pacers a call and offer them the following deal since Kyrie Irving will not be in the Timberwolves plan’s with Rubio locked in. Trade Johnny Flynn, Darko Milicic, Mike Beasley and the Wolves 1st Round Pick (projected #1 overall) in exchange for Roy Hibbert, Danny Granger and Indiana’s 1st round pick (15th overall). Would the Pacers accept? Who knows, but this could set up the Timberwolves to make a Memphis Grizzles type of run with a starting line-up of Rubio, Johnson, Granger, Love and Hibbert. They get a go to scorer in Granger and put a defensive presence that is needed next the Kevin Love in Roy Hibbert. It sets up the Pacers with the #1 overall (projected) pick with which they could take Irving or Derrick Williams if they believe they are set at PG with Darren Collison and Flynn. Pacers love Paul George (2010 1st round pick) and may think he can replace the scoring lost in the trade of Granger with aide from Beasley.

Either way Rubio is (we think) going to be in a Timberwolves uniform and the Timberwolves have a good chance of having 1 of the first 2 picks in the draft. The top 2 prospects in the 2011 NBA Draft do not fit any need’s that the Timberwolves will have with Rubio signed. It will be interesting to see if indeed the Timberwolves trade away their 1st round pick to gain some much needed veteran leadership (like Granger).

The second the (predicted) news of Rubio’s signing is official; STOB will be on it so stay tuned.
