STOB's (A Little Late) Summer Movie Guide - Guest Contributor: Luke

Here at STOB we like our movies, Ben loves Winter’s Bone, Ken loves Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga’Hoole, and D the Producer loves Rudy but never watches movies so in his place will be Luke-“our only listener”.  We all have our thing, but if 2 of us like a movie and you like this blog then we assume you’ll like that same movie.  So let’s take a look at the movies that are coming out this summer, and some of the blockbusters that have already come out this spring and see what the STOB Crew thinks of them.

How they’re ranked:

-         Fo Sho – The “Fo Sho” ranking means that we either will see this “Fo Sho” or we already saw that “Fo Sho”.

-         No Sho – The “No Sho” ranking means that we will not see this movie or did already and think you should be a “No Sho” to it cause it blew chunks.

Categories:

-         Already Out but Notables – These movies are out already but are so notable we think you will want our opinion on them.  As a blog though I guess we think you want our opinion on everything…right or wrong we’ll just keep spewing our opinion…so just read it.

-         Just About to be Released – These movies are about to be released soon so read fast or you will get your buzz killed by somebody giving you the end before you get to the theatre to see it.  Nobody wants to be the guy at the theatre watching The Sixth Sense and already knowing that Bruce Willis is dead because his drunken buddy was blabbering away about it the day after it was released.  So I’ll reiterate, read thoroughly but read fast.

-         Fall Is Comin’ – These movies are the last of the summer flicks to be released, fall is approaching and State Fairs are winding down.  It’s the time that, when you were in middle school you’d get that sinking feeling that school was around the corner so you’d better cram as much summer fun into the last few weeks as possible.

Ok the preliminaries are now complete.  Let’s get to this thing:

Already Out but Notables

“The Hangover 2”

IMDB Description –
Two years after the bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu's wedding. Stu's plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry.

Ben’s Take –
I enjoyed the first Hangover, though I did not worship it like many fellas my age.  It was funny but it wasn’t the greatest comedy of all time or anything.  I have heard mixed reviews on the second Hangover but I will see it.  Fo Sho

Ken’s Take –
Like Ben, I enjoyed the first Hangover as well. It’s funny saying you enjoy a hangover. Anyway, this one might be better in my opinion. I give it a Fo Sho

Luke’s Take –
I wasn’t as huge a fan of the first Hangover as most people seemed to be, but it entertained me.  The second one didn’t disappoint me as much as it did most other viewers, but it was pretty lazily written.  HO3 is already in the works with Zak G’s character needing to be broken out of a psych ward. Yikes.  I’m going to say No Sho

“X-Men: First Class”

IMDB Description –
In 1962, Charles Xavier starts up a school and later a team, for humans with superhuman abilities. Among them is Erik Lensherr, his best friend... and future archenemy.

Ben’s Take-
Ah super hero movies, how I lack interest in thee.  Sorry, but I’ve never been into super heroes and I don’t think I ever will be as I approach the age of 30.  This will be a recurring theme this summer as there are 2.5 million super hero movies coming out this summer.  No Sho.

Ken’s Take-
I wish I liked these kinds of movies. They look cool in the previews, but most of the time end up sucking it up (Insert Star Trek). I know that wasn’t a super hero movie, but it was the same, special effects, big budget type movie. No Sho

 Luke’s Take –
I wanted to like it, and the second half was better than the first half, but trying to weld preposterous super-human evolution projects with the Cuban Missile Crisis just didn’t quite land for me.  (Sidebar: January Jones is one of the worst actresses I can remember seeing)  No Sho

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”

IMDB Description –
Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too.

Ben’s Take-
After seeing the first Pirates there really was no reason for me to go back.  I didn’t see the 2nd and will not be Netflix-ing it to try to catch up.  No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
I liked the first one. I thought it was fun and a good theatre movie. I wasn’t sold on any of the other ones, but for some reason, I will go see this one. Fo Sho

Luke’s Take –
Pirates 1 was one of the most fun times I had at the movies that I can remember.  2 was… less so.  3 made me hate movies.  Depp and Verbinski admitted afterwards that they read the script and had no idea what was going on, they just made it anyway.  I find it ironic that their plan to reinvigorate a movie franchise that was floundering because it was just too complicated is to name it On STRANGER Tides.  I will see it eventually but it will be more for paying homage to the first one than anything. No Sho

“The Tree of Life”

IMDB Description –
The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence.

Ben’s Take –
Hardly know what this movie is about.  Maybe I should Google it?  Or just say…No Sho.

Ken’s Take -
Not sure what the heck it’s about, but I’m intrigued. Redox anyone? Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Sean Penn kinda annoys me, but I do want to see this.  Not a must see in theaters, but I’ll go get it in Redbox or Netfilx.  Fo Sho

“Kung Fu Panda 2”

IMDB Description –
Po joins forces with a group of new kung-fu masters to take on an old enemy with a deadly new weapon.

Ben’s Take –
A lovable comical panda busting out crazy kung fu moves to whoop up on other animals?  I took my first dose of it and it was alright, so the second dose can’t hurt.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take –
I wouldn’t go see this on my own, but the girlfriend loved the first one, so I will have to say Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Never saw the entire first, but I like the Skidoosh move where the Panda belly bumps his adversary.  I saw a little of #1 on FX the other day and it looked pretty good.  Kids will love it, parents will probably get chuckles too.  Fo Sho

Just About to be Released

“Super 8” June 10th

IMDB Description –
After witnessing a mysterious train crash, a group of friends in the summer of 1979 begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town, and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon.

Ben’s Take –
While I am not a fan of super heroes, I am a fan of aliens, or UFOs, or whatever the heck is going on in Super 8.  The lack of info and the confusing previews created to attempt to stir up interest worked on me.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take –
It has the dad from the great NBC show Friday night lights. Plus, it looks really creepy. Fo Sho

Luke’s Take –
Going tonight.  Really like Kyle Chandler of “Early Edition” and “Friday Night Lights” fame.  JJ Abrams always brings something unique and there’s something about the previews that remind me of a modern day ET.  I’m sure it won’t be near as iconic as ET, but it should be really solid in the sci-fi adventure genre.  Fo Sho

“Mr. Poppers Penguins” – June 17th

IMDB Description –
The life of a businessman begins to change after he inherits six penguins, and as he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland, his professional side starts to unravel.

Ben’s Take –
I want to point out that in our last podcast Derrick said he had never watched Ace Ventura…that is still bugging me.  Jim Carrey and penguins, you’d think it’d be a great combination but for some reason leaves me with a feeling of No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
Unlike Ben, I think this has a chance to be really funny. I have seen some of the outtakes and knowing Jim Carrey, he will make this movie fun. Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take-
I loved this book as a kid.  With source material like this, I bet it will be decent and Carrey will make the kids laugh and the parents at least smile.  Fo Sho

“Green Lantern” – June 17th

IMDB Description –
A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.

Ben’s Take –
Super hero alert! No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
The only way I would see this movie is if it was the only thing left in redbox and I had a free code. Guess what, that will never happen. No Sho.

Luke’s Take –
I like Ryan Reynolds.  The previews look… strange.  I know very little about the Green Lantern character and we seem to really be scraping the bottom of the comic book barrel these days.  Apparently, Reynolds is given a ring that allows him the power of making whatever he imagines reality.  How can that be defeated?  I’m sure I’ll see it an might kinda like it, but most people probably will not.  No Sho

“Bad Teacher” – June 24th

IMDB Description –
A comedy centered around a foul-mouthed, junior high teacher who, after being dumped by her sugar daddy, begins to woo a colleague -- a move that pits her against a well-loved teacher.

Ben’s Take –
In the preview Jason Segel argues with a young lad about Lebron being better than Michael Jordan.  That has me interested in this movie.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take –
Seems to have a good cast, but something just isn’t doing it for me. Could be very very wrong. No Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Segal is a solid straight man in a comedy.  Phyllis from The Office and Timberlake could deliver strong supporting roles here.  This all rests on Diaz, if she pulls off a good performance and there are some well written jokes this could be good.  I’m going to go cynical and say No Sho

“Cars 2” – June 24th

IMDB Description –
Star race car Lightning McQueen and his pal Mater head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix race. But the road to the championship becomes rocky as Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.

Ben’s Take –
My nephew loves Cars and I can understand why.  The first Cars was underrated in my opinion and I will definitely be seeing this second take on it.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take -
This movie can drive it self right off a cliff. No thanks. No Sho.

Luke’s Take-
I have no authority on the Cars series.

“Transformers: Dark Of The Moon” – July 1st

IMDB Description –
The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and to learn its secrets.

Ben’s Take –
Are transformers super heroes?  Close enough to me, plus I haven’t seen the first two in this series.   No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
Don’t mind the Transformers movies, but the trailer made me think it was going to be a different movie. For that, I say No Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Looks like they are getting away from the ridiculous kiddish antics of Tranny2, and I’m hopeful.  Fo Sho

“Horrible Bosses” – July 8th

IMDB Description –
Three friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the way of their happiness.

Ben’s Take –
I don’t condone conspiring to kill your boss.  I know the economy is rough and all but just hit up the ol’ Monster.com and update the profile kids jeez.  Quality cast makes me think this movie could be solid.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take -
This will be the best movie of the summer. Hands down. Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Colin Farrel’s character looks great.  Charlie Day always cracks me up and the rest of this cast will most certainly not disappoint either.  I think this could be a huge comedy hit in the vein of Wedding Crasher and Old School.  Fo Sho

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” – July 15th

IMDB Description –
The end begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort's final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.

Ben’s Take –
People still care about Harry Potter?  Aren’t the kids that grew up with the first Harry Potter and read the first books of the series now members of AARP?  No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
Harry Potter is for children. No Sho.

Luke’s Take –
I will see it.  It will FINALLY conclude the series and I loved the books as a youngster, what is now many years ago.  The books are too complicated to really work as movies, so they always somewhat disappointed me.  Only if you’re either an HP fan OR if you are OCD and have come this far will I say Fo Sho

“Winnie the Pooh” – July 15th

IMDB Description –
During an ordinary day in Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh sets out to find some honey. Misinterpreting a note from Christopher Robin, Pooh convinces Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo, and Eeyore that their young friend has been captured by a creature named "Backson" and they set out to save him.

Ben’s Take –
What the heck is Hollywood thinking?  Remaking an old cartoon has never worked has it?  If it has leave us a comment or email, but I can’t think of one that did well.  I used to love Winnie the Pooh but No Sho.

Ken’s Take-
YAAWWWWWNNNNNNN! NEXT! No Sho.

Luke’s Take-
Pray no kids you belong to ask you to take them to this.  No Sho

“Captain America: The First Avenger” – July 22nd

IMDB Description –
After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals.

Ben’s Take-
I told you there were 2.5 million super hero movies coming out this summer. No Sho.

Ken’s Take-
Don’t know why, I haven’t even seen a trailer, but I’m sold. Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Chris Evans makes me concerned.  But the best superhero movies are the ones that try to stay the least preposterous such as, Iron Man and Dark Knight.  This would meet that criteria more.  Could be good I know I’m going to see it Fo Sho

Fall Is Comin’ -

“Cowboys & Aliens” – July 29th

IMDB Description –
A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way.

Ben’s Take –
“People like cowboys.  People like aliens.  LET’S COMBINE THEM!”  Hollywood execs must’ve had that exact thought go through their head.  I can’t blame them, although they probably could’ve used a bit more imagination on the title.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take –
My uncle has been talking about this movie for over a year. Therefore, I have to see it. Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Favreau and Speilberg, Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde.  I have no idea how this movie will make any sense based on the title, it seems that Craig is some kind of cowpoke alien-abduction survivor with a fancy new anti-ET bracelet.  I’m compelled to see what is going on here Fo Sho

“The Smurfs” – July 29th

IMDB Description –
When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Ben’s Take –
Derrick brought up in the last podcast that the Smurfs maybe racist and anti-semitic.  I brought up earlier that remaking old cartoon shows never works.  Combine both of those and I am not interested.  No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
I want to see if they are racist and anti-semitic. I hope they aren’t, but there is only one way to find out. Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take –
After listening to the STOB podcast where they read an article claiming the Smurfs were anti-Semitic, I can’t look at them the same way.  No Sho

“Crazy, Stupid, Love” – July 29th

IMDB Description –
A father's life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children.

Ben’s Take –
Now that Steve Carell is off The Office I will probably need a Michael Scott fix by early August.  Lucky for me Carell can only play one character and that character is pretty much exactly like Michael Scott.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take-
This movie looks laugh out loud funny. No, not the stupid LOL you but in a text, real gut busting laughter….followed by a : (  at some point. Fo Sho

Luke’s Take -
Not a big RomCom fan.  Like Carrell though.  I’m torn so I will just give you my plan and that is to be a No Sho

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” – August 5th

IMDB Description –
An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

Ben’s Take –
I watch a lot of ESPN videos on the internet, and for the entire month of May they ran the preview for this movie as the ad prior to the ESPN clip.  It was really creepy with an ape just sitting there staring at who knows what.  Silent….just staring…with those creepy ape eyes.  I am in.  Fo Sho.

Ken’s Take -
This will be worse than the Mark Walberg one. No Sho.

Luke’s Take –
This looks like the kind of movie I like.  A creative, all-be-it familiar, concept with James Franco attached.  That’s really all I need.  Fo Sho

“30 Minutes or Less” – August 12th

IMDB Description –
Two fledgling criminals (McBride and Swardson) kidnap a pizza delivery guy (Eisenberg), strap a bomb to his chest, and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank or else...

Ben’s Take –
Sorry but it’s becoming tough to tell who is more hateable Mark Zuckerburg or Jesse Eisenberg the kid who played him in The Social Network.  Eisenberg also seems to have the Steve Carell disease of playing a character that is exactly like the character that made him famous.  Also Eisenberg seems to be that character in real life, so maybe he doesn’t act at all, it’s just him.  Either way I don’t like him.  No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
Unlike Ben, I think Jesse is funny. I like actors like this. Vince Vaughn might be the best at it, but Jesse is becoming a close second. Fo Sho.

Luke’s Take –
I think this looks like it will really get some cheap laughs out of me.  Not a huge fan of Aziz Ansari or Jesse Eisenberg, but the preview looked like a pretty solid buddy comedy.  Full of blundering and wisecracking along the lines of Pineapple Express. Fo Sho

“Conan the Barbarian” – August 19th

IMDB Description –
The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.

Ben’s Take –
I am going to go ahead and count Conan as a super hero. No Sho.

Ken’s Take –
Ugh, perfect for winter. I hate winter and I will hate this movie. No Sho.

Luke’s Take –
Mickey Rourke slipping quietly back into oblivion… No Sho
